Art school is like an experimental science lab. Spring is MFA exhibition season in Chicago, and a chance to see some of the freshest, most inquisitive art in the city. Some of it is probably still wet.

The best times to go are the opening receptions, where you can meet the excitable, newly liberated artists. (Just don’t mention the mountain of tuition debt they’ll soon be facing.) Here are a few strong picks for this spring:

Straus pointed out that underinsurance was also a big problem, because plenty of people amass pretty large collections of art, antiques, jewelry or other collectibles, but relatively few have a firm grasp of what those collections are actually worth. Because people build collections out of love, she said, they often do not consider them with the same financial rigor that they would apply to other assets, and often just insure items for the price they paid for them.

‘I can remember the first time that a work of art knocked my socks off. It was Van Gogh’s ‘Peach Trees in Blossom,’” recalled Douglas Druick, the wiry, diminutive president and director of the Art Institute of Chicago. The 67-year-old, now in his second year on the job, was promoted from within after 26 years in the Art Institute’s curatorial ranks, most recently as chairman of both the department of prints and drawings and the department of medieval to modern European painting and sculpture. We are talking in his office hard by one of his old haunts—the department of prints and drawings.

Chicago is losing its artists, to New York City and Los Angeles and San Francisco. This is admitted, from various members–with varying statures–of the art community, either begrudgingly or with ease, but in the end, is always admitted.

“It’s difficult for me to generalize this, because people move for different reasons,” explains Jason Foumberg, contributing art editor at Newcity (where I’ve freelanced in the past) andChicago magazine’s art critic. “The art market here is smaller, so people tend to follow the money if they want to have an art career.”

In the last half-decade, no less than five “exchange exhibitions,” several fact-finding missions and study trips, and a graduate seminar that positioned the entire city of “Detroit as material,” have contributed to a mushrooming local interest—let’s call it our Motor City crush—among artists, curators, and arts educators.

But why has Detroit, a city 300 miles east and better known as a modern wasteland—burned-out, crime-ridden, and dilapidated—stirred the minds of Chicago’s artists? The aftermath of Detroit’s severe economic depression turned out ripe materials for the artistic imagination: cheap, gigantic spaces; detritus loaded with readymade values; neighborhoods begging for transformation. In many ways Detroit has offered not a blank slate but a case study in experimental urban rejuvenation, calling adventurists and venture capitalists alike.
